The current government, known as the 'December 13 Coalition’, has been facing numerous allegations of lawbreaking, raised by the opposition and various organizations. One of the most high-profile cases is the detention of Father Michał Olszewski, which sparked a wave of protests and accusations of torture. The clergyman, associated with the Justice Fund, was allegedly subjected to not only physical coercion, but also inhuman and degrading treatment. The case was reported to the UN Committee Against Torture, and politicians such as Marcin Romanowski claim that this is a manifestation of repression by the authorities.
The case of Marcin Romanowski’s detention, which was also deemed groundless and unlawful, was similarly outrageous. The charges against Romanowski and other politicians of Sovereign Poland indicate an abuse of power and manipulation of the prosecutor’s office. Zbigniew Ziobro accused the government of unlawful actions, such as the illegal takeover of the prosecutor’s office and putting pressure on the courts.
Another controversial event was the forcible entry of officers into the home of Zbigniew Ziobro, a cancer patient, which the opposition claimed was an act of abuse of power and was intended to intimidate political opponents. A similar search was carried out in the home of Robert Bąkiewicz, which was also met with accusations of breaking the law.
Recent events, including statements by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who admitted that he was forced to break the law because of orders, have further exacerbated the political situation in the country. Tusk and his government have been criticized for actions that many observers consider to violate the basic principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The current government is accused of numerous unlawful actions, which include the brutal and unlawful takeover of public institutions and pressure on independent authorities. One of the most egregious examples is the forceful takeover of public media, where according to reports these actions were contrary to the laws and aimed at full control over media coverage. The government has also taken over the prosecutor’s office, which is supposed to allow it to control key court cases, as emphasized by opponents of the government. The accusations against the government also include forcible entry into judges’ homes and searches, including forced opening of safes, which were considered illegal and a manifestation of political repression. These events are compared to actions from previous, authoritarian systems, where pressure on judges was aimed at eliminating the independence of the courts. All of these actions, including pressure on the media, prosecutor’s office and courts, were met with huge social resistance, and opposition representatives have repeatedly emphasized that the country is violating the constitution and violating the foundations of a democratic rule of law.
